Any thoughts on creating anti-heroes? Do you use them, or are your main characters predominantly without flaws?

The story I'm working on (well, I've written the prologue so that's something) essentially has two main characters. Whilst both of them seem quite "good" on the surface, they have flaws that I'm sure will test the reader's willingness to sympathize with them as the story progresses. But the flaws interest me and make them real.

The lead female character becomes ...

Why do we write? I've been 8 years (yes that's right) without writing anything worthwhile, this after having chased my dream of being a writer since the age of 12 and achieving it and in the process becoming one of the youngest authors signed by HarperCollins. Since then, nada. But there are a lot of reasons for that, some external and all beside the point.

Writing has tormented my sleep, destroyed my eye-sight and generally caused me a whole world of grief. And yet ... I can't give ...

I can't even pick up a pen and write a poem at the moment. I was so ready to go when i was doing my masters that i was chomping at the bit. i thought that maybe it was left over tiredness - a month later and i'm wondering . . .

I apologize if this thread already exists or should be posted somewhere else, but I thought it would be fun...

Do you have any stories where you envision an actor/Hollywood star as you write? Not necessarily based on their acting abilities, but who fits the look of your character?

In my wip, Adrian Grenier (from Entourage) looks exactly like my hero, and Isla Fisher looks very close to how I imagine my heroine. Also, In my first YA, Ben Barnes (from Prince Caspian) would be perfect ...

While at the "Guilty Pleasures" thread, the full realization of how book-obsessed I am came to light, which led me to thinking how writers might have a few things in common.

You might be a novelist if...

-your interest in books supercedes your interest in fashion.

-you sometimes prefer the people in your own imagination to the people your own real life.

-you confuse others by talking about your characters like they're real people.

I've just posted a short story on the SYW forum here and on absolutewrite. I know that the critiques here will be constructive and useful.
The most recent Nathan Bransford blog is about characters needing motives. You can find it here: clicky

It got me thinking: do you have clear motives for your MC? Are there things you'll have to change later, if you agree with what's said in this post?

What is the motivation for your MC?

Currently i'm working on the world buidling aspect of my current WIP and have by my bedside locker the book 'How to write SF & F' by orson scott card. I've skimmed through most of it but in the process of world building certain things seem to come into play:

1. Rules of your world

2. Invention of the past

 - Evolution

 - History

 - Biography of important/historic people

What I would like to do is, over the next couple of weeks, have everyone (or those that want to, anyone - obviously it's not compulsory) tell me a goal that they have for the coming months. It doesn't have to be big - you can update your goal(s) once you've met one, or if you have to change it.

I've always known that i'm a 'loose' plotter - i like to see where the blog flows etc rather than outlining every little scene. The fact is though that my writing style has gotten me no where fast. So, as many of you know i purchased 'how to write first draft in thirty days' which is all about writing a very comprehensive outline in a month

the authors point is that you sort out all the kinks and plot holes before you sit down to write your 'full draft' (book terminology) which makes a ...

So I was entertaining a question, and decided that it would make good discussion.

I am working on my novel, Wings, and I recently decided that I may change one of the main components of a character in the story. A major character. Now I'm not done with the novel. Some people would suggest I keep writing - just crank out the entire story, and then do the revisions in the editing process.

With a core idea, do you go back and rewrite past chapters before you finish the ones ahead? Part ...

Basically, the rules are that someone would leave a title (or as many as they like) that they like, but would never use. Then, if someone takes that title, they have to post another title. Even if someone doesn't want to claim a title, they can always post one (or more) if they want. :]

We've all heard -- and sometimes lived! -- the horror stories: that an author creates a wonderful story with the best plot ever created only to discover that his or her characters are predictable, flat, boring and completely cardboard.

So how do we avoid the nightmare of cardboard characters?

Bonding with them, of course!

Sometimes it might only be on the final draft that an author realises that something is pulling the novel together from above - overlying theme.

Discuss here some themes you want to work into your novels.

I'll start - in mine i hope to have a subtle hint of the philosophical theme - Free will Vs Determinism or Religion Vs. Atheism
