Er...I've always set them, but never stuck to them. Thanks for starting this. I'm setting one right here - complete novel and collection of short stories before end of 2009.

I know that looks very easy and doable, but I set the same deadline in 2008 for the same novel. The short story deadline has been around since 2005. No

I seriously need a reminding device that can't be turned off, and that squirts indelible ink on you each time you exceed the time limit.

There is an excellent blog here: Deadline Dames that's run by a group of published authors, including some big names: Keri Arthur, Lilith Saintcrow, Rachel Vincent, for example. I was going to link to it in one of the other threads, but it really fits here. You should all check it out. Very Happy

Lol - i love the look of it. very 40's

I totally agree with her advice about writing another novel immediately - i was working out a five year plan -wear i would write three books (inc my current) so when i'm querying one i'll be writing another, cause i'm assuming that my first/second novels will be rejected.

Article is excellent - thanks Dae!

My two goals are going to be tough to complete. I SHOULD finish up the second book of a trilogy and I am itching to start this new book that I just can't stop thinking about. I would love to finish the second book and get at least a third of the way into the new book by the end of the summer. Too ambitious, I wonder?

No crwilson - aim high! The way i see it when you have the drive and motivation - use it cause you never know when it might dry up! i envy people who can write a novel in few months and its written well. I labour over everything.

I like the 24 hour short story contests at writers weekly (www.writersweekly.com very awesome weekly ezine that also features free lance writing opportunities that pay writers). They email a 'topic' & word count max & you have 24 hours from the time of the email to submit a short story. It's only a 5 dollar entry fee & contest winnner gets a few hundred bucks. Otherwise - I don't set many deadlines - I deal with enough of those for my day job & I want to keep the writing fun & upbeat - rather than make it a chore. or rush through & make a mess of things.

I just had to share this quote I found, from Douglas Adams:

"I love deadlines. I love the wooshing sound they make as they fly past."

I love that quote Daeonica, that's what happens with most of my deadlines. I have one I have to keep now if I want to submit a short story to the contest. March 25. I think I have a vague idea of what I may do.

"...my deadlines are 50 active "last post" threads, with hundreds of inter reacting posters and a hitcount, leading into some many tens of thousands of hits by the end of the year..." mentioned the goblin who somehow knew that idea of creating a recognizable Internet self that writes well, as opposed to just writing something hoping that it would be accepted was not going to be understood straight off here, so he just said "...I want to be known by my posts, that all..."

My aim is to maike it up to 90,000 words with my currentnoevl by the end of March (currently on 72,000).

I think that's probably way too optimistioc - but it's good to aim high!

I didn't think I'd make my deadline for the competition. But I did! I had started one short story but it flopped and I didn't like it. So on Wednesday I was doing chores, running errands, and cooking (not a normal Wednesday activity,) and got inspired. Now all I'm working on is editing! So yay for making deadlines!

The newest Deadline Dames post is giving readers the chance to ask the Dames (who are all published (and bestselling) or soon to be published authors) any questions.

So, go ahead and pick something difficult to ask them about!

I find it very helpful to jump into a new project the second you finish one. Then it becomes a "started project". While you are busy promoting/interviewing/other wise pimping your new book, you have another book underway. I find it is much easier to pick up a started project then start one after you have stopped writing for a while.
