I had a pet baby squirrel named Bert (I know, but "her" name used to be Fluffy until Granpa told me it was a he and it was the first boy-name I could think of at that age)

Bert's mom died when he was a baby (her name was Mike before we found out it was a "she". I changed her name to Miguela later). We found her first, heard the squeals and realised there was a baby close by. The vet said he wouldn't survive by himself in the wild, but if we released him when he grew old enough, he would have a chance.

We bought a huge cage and Bert opened his eyes for the first time a week later. His nose was like velvet and he used to run up granpa's shoulders. He drank milk, water, the goop the vet gave him, and even started eating bits of carrots, bananas and the like as he grew. He never snapped at or bit us. However, he didn't like my aunt much and squealed and squirmed when she tried to go close.

I was just learning to knit, and although I hated all needles, I knitted a tiny yellow..."piece" for him, which I called his blanket. It was the only full thing I ever knitted. He loved it and never bit it or dirtied it even once. He used to put one tiny hand on the tip of my finger and would just lie there under the blanket, bright eyes peeking out at me.

Thing started going wrong a couple of months later and he simply wouldnt eat. The vet couldn't find any disease or anything wrong but Bert grew weaker and didn't move much.

One horrible October 16th, Granpa told me Bert had gone to his mother.

I've never had a pet since and probably never will again. I still have the yellow "blanket" and on October 16th, I go over to Granpa's and put a flower in his old cage.

Sorry. I know I'm pathetic. It's all true though, and I still miss Bert.

*hugs*

I think its lovely that you remember him though.

Thanks, both of you Sad I have no idea, Rose. His eyes were bright and coat shiny till the end, and there was NO disease. He just didn't want to eat anymore.

Ok, *promises to stop talking about Bert...for a while*

That happened to my cat. It was probably just his time to go. My cat died a couple of weeks ago and during that last week he just...died. He didn't eat. He was just ready to die.

Speaking of dead pets, just to make things worse my dog (who everyone agreed was the most lovable dog in the world) died last week. He was sick of some sort of glandular thing and then after he was getting better, he just dropped dead. We figure his heart gave out. That happens to animals who are way too big for themselves (he was two hundred pounds for a breed that maxes at 165).

Oh NO! I'm so sorry about both the cat and dog. Sad That's just too harsh on you, everything happening within two weeks. No
*extra hugs*

Hope you feel better soon.
