Sharing Work Empty
PostSubject: Sharing Work   Sharing Work EmptyFri Feb 20, 2009 10:16 am

I think it would be easier and more beneficial to the members if there was a section devoted to critiques where everyone could have their own thread, whether it be for excerpts, queries, synopses, etc. I was looking at the "sharing your work" thread and it seems like it could get confusing pretty fast if we get several people posting excerpts in there. Just a thought!!

Ignore me if I'm missing something...

Well, I can see the benefit of that idea. The thread did get pretty chaotic sometimes on the Draft.

My only concern is that people wouldn't be seeing each others threads. While our site is this size, I think it's ok, but it might be harder in the future.

I suppose we could have a rule similar to the other thread - that you have to post three comments on someone elses before you can update your own thread? people are genuinely decent.

Playing devils advocate - cause i trust you all

but My only concern is the fact that this is an open forum - but i think (i'm not very techno) i can make a private section for users only like on the dex, but it would still be open to anyone who chooses to register with the forum - and i'm emailing people like a spammer Laughing

- i guess if we post a warning and that

we could have a system as well similar to the published section that only mods can start comments so we have control over how many thread there are?

Its a really great idea though - we'd be able to edit synopsis and summarys and might be easier to follow excerpts. . . hmmmmm. .

You're not just a pretty face Lappillus Wink .

Sharing Work Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sharing Work   Sharing Work EmptyFri Feb 20, 2009 10:55 am

Some people feel more concerned about posting stuff on the internet than others. Personally, I really don't believe in the whole 'OMG, People will steal it!' thing that seems to go on sometimes.

But, yeah, if you can make it private that might be good. Maybe ask on the Sharing thread, to see what the people who are posting there think?

Hmmm yeah i think i'll post a link onto this board and see what people think. Ha we're very democratic aren't we - viva la republique! Very Happy

edit: linked it from over there. I think your right DG - i think that alot of people won't use it but some people will, so there mightn't be too much of an 'influx' in the future.

PostSubject: Re: Sharing Work   Sharing Work EmptyFri Feb 20, 2009 11:23 am

My fear is only a little bit on the OMG THIEF line. I'm more afraid that by posting it in a public forum, I'll be considered "published" without a publisher. Perhaps those authors who have already gone through the publishing process know a little more about this than I... as much as I love you all and want opinions and feedback, I don't want a publisher, later down the road, to turn me down because I've been previously published or something.

I am just so naive with the technical aspects about the second half of the writing process - the publishing process - that I just don't know what's safe to do or not.

I wrote Emily back... we'll see about this. I like the idea, I really do. Especially if we make the board closed to guests.

Obviously if someone is uncomfortable, they wouldn't post any of their work. I just thought it would be good for those who do want to and more user-friendly for those who want to comment and offer critiques. You could certainly wait until the board has more members and interest if you're concerned about having a relatively "dead" section.

Ren, Nathan Bransford once commented on posting excerpts online. He said, essentially, that he thinks it is fine (in his opinion) if you are limiting it, i.e. not posting the whole book, and can pull it off the net at any time should you need to. He also mentioned it is very rare and unlikely that people would steal your work, his only concern was with contracts. As long as you can pull it from the net, should an agent or publisher request it, you should be fine.

Ok how about this - i set up a section which is private to users only where we can set up our threads with three post rule. Anyone can pm me and i'll delete their thread completely if/when they go querying it.

As long as you think it will benefit the forum! It's only a suggestion. I'm not trying to push for it. I leave it up to you mods!

PostSubject: Re: Sharing Work   Sharing Work EmptyFri Feb 20, 2009 2:10 pm

I had an idea immediately following the deletion of the Sharing Your Work thread on the Draft of making an entire forum dedicated to sharing work. But as I was making it, I suddenly realized that I couldn't take on the responsibility. I think that this whole thing - an entire section dedicated to this - is excellent. I am thrilled that even though I myself cannot go ahead and make the forum, in some small way it kind of exists.

I'd be more interested in people volunteering to be critiques and exchanging the areas we want to be critiqued through e-mail or private messages. That way the work is guaranteed to be read and there will be no people stealing work.

I personally only use the sharing work board to share parts of a piece I really like and am thrilled about.

Blue - i've set up a post similar to the WD critique circle on the share your work forum.

Also would like to know does anyone mind me locking the 'general' share your work thread? I might move it to the other forum if people just want to post snippets of work rather than using a whole thread?

I think that we should keep it open, but move it to the other forum. Like you said, just in case somebody just wants to post a snippet or two.
