PostSubject: What are you working on right now?   Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:58 am

Ok i guess i'll start. Well at the moment i'm supposed to being doing work for university but i bought a book called from first draft to finished novel two days ago. I don't place much value in books like these but i'm a very unorganised person and this book to me is helping me change the way i go about writing.

So at the moment i'm putting aside my current WIP for little while and working on new project by using these organised methods (outlining, foundation building etc. ) - i'm excited to see how it goes! Very Happy

Well, I'm not very organized when it comes to writing either, schedule wise that is. I do make sure I have time to write, but I have a busy schedule, or actually I did but then my husband left for boot camp. So I have been writing more lately, but not a lot. I would do writing at night but I work till 8:00 and don't get back till 8:30 sometimes, depending on traffic. Pregnancy has also left me rather tired despite the fact I can't sleep through the night, it's annoying.

But I finished a chapter in my book and am happy about that! At least I have some progress!

I found that an outline is definitely the way to go. After I have an outline finished, I write chapter summaries. This helps keep the initial draft flowing. I always know what I'm going to write before I sit down to do it. It also eliminates a lot of editing/butchering/switching in the drafts to follow. I usually do character bios so I have a firm grasp on who they are and what their history is.

I am currently writing the second book in my mid-grade series. Also have been spending time revising the first, which is almost ready to be sent out to a publisher/agent. Unfortunately I haven't had the luxury of more than a couple of hours a day to work on it. Lately, most of my writing time has come late at night when I'm not at my best.

Scratchy, are you a morning person too? I seem to only be able to function in the morning times, when i have to do all my commuting and lectures.

my problem is i started all the bios etc. with my current WIP but i myself had no idea where the plot was going and i can see myself that although i'm only at chapter 1 it was going to be a problem. So i'm trying the outline approach so atleast i have a plan when i sit down and write.

Ugh pity i didn't think of this, oh i duno, 6 months ago Laughing

I'm more of an afternoon person. It takes me way too long to function in the morning.

The outline and chapter summary also helps keep writer's block to a minimum. Therefore I rarely lose interest in a project. If I can complete an outline, chapter summary, and character bios, I know I'll be able to complete the entire manuscript. I would urge all writers who haven't given it a try to do their next manuscript this way.

well in the book i mentioned above, there are these worksheets for characters which i really liked and basically made me decide the book. it involved the usually character specs but also
involved how externally people and you saw the character AND how the character themselves see themselves.

although in my mind i'd be thinking all this stuff, its nice to have it cleanly clarified and organised rather than the scribbles on a dozen different bits of paper which is my method Laughing

I feel like i'm taking a proactive step or something Smile

I'm writing and outlining at the same time. I used to be a pants writer, but I really started to see the benefits of an outline and wanted to give it a go. So, I made an outline to the best of my ability, made some character profiles, worked on my character arcs, etc., and then started writing with the intention of fleshing out my outline more as I go. It seems to be going okay. I left a lot of room for "pants" writing so I think I'm getting the best of both.

I'm also brainstorming a rewrite for my NaNo novel and jotting down ideas for another novel that's a brewin'.

Oh interesting Lap, i'm a 'pants' sort of girl too, but i think i'm way too on the extreme side, where i'm actually lobsided Laughing

I sort of get stressed and confused when it comes to characters arc etc. but i'm going to try and remain calm and see how it goes.

Done the detailed outline and four chapters (prologue, first two chapters and last chapter). I know, I'm the slowest writer alive.

If there's a prologue, is it better to have an epilogue as well? I really don't want an epilogue.

Okay, this was totally the mistake I made with NaNoWriMo when I tried it before, but I didn't realize it until afterward.

I just started writing and wrote what I wanted to as it came to me. Which was fun, but burned me out quickly. When I thought about it later I thought about my approach to writing papers for school. I *never* start a paper without doing an extensive outline first. My husband and I joke about how it takes me longer to write an outline than it does the paper itself. Why in the world did I think my brain would function differently when I was approaching a work of fiction?

Anyways, that's what I decided I would do differently next time. Work on the outline, create character bios, etc. I started some character bios awhile ago, but haven't finished. I need to get back to it. There are these people in my head and I think the story will go so much better when I've had some good conversations with them and really gotten to know them.

Emily, can you post the info for that book you got? I know you mentioned it on your blog too, and I was interested in it. I think it would help me a great deal.

ReNu, I don't think a prologue necessitates an epilogue. If it doesn't work for your story, its best to leave it out, right?

No Probs iheart - its affiliated with writer's digest and they do a great summary of the book (with free downloads of the worksheet too)

you can buy it anywhere though, even in my country Laughing

here is the link: http://www.writersdigest.com/article/first-draft-finish-novel

Here is the link for the other book (i haven't bought this but i might, it seems the emphasis in this book is more on the outline stage only while the 'first draft to finished novel' is more broadly focused.

http://www.writer2writer.com/draft.htm - i've read alot of positive things about this book, this is the first one.

I actually bought that book (along with a few others, both fiction and non) at the bookstore on Sunday. I'm in love with it. I've been working through it and I just...well, it rocks! I LOVE Writer's Digest books. I swear by them. Smile

Its first WD book i bought, and its making an impression. I used my bday money to buy a FILING CABINET!! Laughing it left that strong impression and now i have files for each of my projects and within each of these subfiles for research, setting, bios etc.

Trust me, i am not an organised person, but i'm taking this book really slow and one step at a time. I'm currently at 'research' stage - maybe in lil while i'll move to 'blueprint' stage Smile

I got a filing cabinet for Christmas.

There are some things in the book that don't work for me, but overall it's pretty awesome. I have my own weird version of outlining that I compiled from about three or four different methods, and it works for me. *Shrug*

I'm sort of annoyed. I want to write, but I keep thinking that I need more outlines...more plotting...more profiles....more, more, more! But I don't want to do more outlining. Bleh. That's the one downside to that book. I think that if I follow everything, I'll end up overplotting.

Plus I'm in a slump, but that belongs on a different thread, so I'll take it over there...

PostSubject: finally starting to gear up   Sun Mar 08, 2009 6:59 pm

This may or may not have anything to do with this thread, but I have recently decided to pick up my sorry ass and finish a novel. I have been writing stories and essays for a long time (nothing published, I have never shared my stuff before), but I've never accomplished a novel.
My bookseller friend literally handed me the book "No plot? No problem!" the other day. I have finally figured out that everybody knows about Nanowrimo...I vaguely remember reading about it on the internet a few years ago, but I never really thought it was something I would do. Until now. I'm thinking "serendipity" with all of the wonderful writers on this forum and my friend handing me the book etc...

I don't know if I am going to follow the book in every way, but I have started a new blog at
http://anovelin30days.blogspot.com/
You are more than welcome to poke fun at me etc!

I have also noticed that a few people have word counters on their blogs. I'm thinking about putting one up too but I wanted to know if there are several to choose from or if everybody is using the Nanowrimo one....

Thank you for the inspiration! Embarassed

I'm still working on tSotD revisions. I'm on spring break this week, and I'm hoping to get my major revisions finished by the end of the week. Hopefully I'll be able to. Right now I'm taking a break from cleaning my room (and setting up my new writing space), but starting later this afternoon it is major intense super revision time. Smile

Well, sorry for the double post, but it's been a while...

I'm still finishing up tSotD revisions, and I've been debating which project to outline next: the sequel or The Family Secret. I *did* promise my Family Secret characters that I'd get to working on their story soon, but I'm sort of compelled to write The Silent Halls (the sequel to tSotD). Although The Family Secret is the story with Ray (those of you who know him know that he's a veeeeery interesting character...).

Hm.

Eeney-meeney-miney-mo...

At the moment, I'm aiming to write 1000 words each day on my main novel, Dangerous Dances. Once I've achieved that, I'll let myself work on other projects.
However, so far it hasn't happened. I wanted to do this every day in May, but... nope. Friday is my last day of school before study leave (for exams), though, so I'm hopeful that I'll get much more done then.

I printed out the unedited manuscript of The Enigma last night (don't tell my mother). I'm going to go through and red-pen it this month, and this summer, when I have time, I'll start plugging all the edits in.

On another note, my horoscope (not that I put much stock in it -- I just read it for fun) said that I'm going to get a fantastic new idea on the 17th. Hope so. I need some new ones. Razz

Take some of mine, Novel, please! They keep jumping up and down in my head at the moment. "Write me next, write me next!" "No, pick me, I'm more interesting!"
