[SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go Empty
PostSubject: [SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go   [SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go EmptySat Jul 11, 2009 3:50 am

Ok here is July's book of the month - never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Come here to discuss your thoughts about this novel.

I absolutely loved this book, its beautifully written and so touching yet frightening too. It is just so heartbreaking though especially when Ruth looks for her original - and the ending. I just wanted Kathy to fight, to have a voice. i wanted her to have written this novel so people could *see* that these children were people!!

I loved though that although what we see is horrible - its like the best of the worst! especially when kathy recalls the dying donor who gets her to repeat her memories of Hailsham so he could forget where he was kept!!

Definitely i wish i could write a book like this masterpiece!

I really liked this book. The way the past and present combined to tell the whole story was just amazing. The song that the main character really liked was very well written into the plot. At first it made no sense to me why the song "Never Let me Go" was really in the story until the end. It made a lot of sense at that point.

The whole scenario or cloning people for donation was very interesting as well. I didn't think that was what the plot was about and kept trying to figure out the carers and donors bit. But it made sense as to why they would try to defer the process and were kept from society.

So yeah, I'll end my rambling. I thought the book was amazing and the way they kept you guessing what was really going on while intertwining life stories was amazing!

Blue - i felt the same! It was so beautifully written, like a tapestry of memories but it was so haunting too and i think the underlying moral of the story is sooo important!

the depiction of the relationships between the characters particularly struck me, i have a ruth in my life so i could really relate to Kate and to her childhood, which makes it so sad.

I was a little annoyed with the ending, i know the point of that ending is to illustate kate's powerlessness but i felt like jumping into the book and yelling "fight for your right to live"!!!

Me too! I kept wondering why they didn't just run off or something. But if the book were like that it wouldn't be quite so poetic. Maybe they had tracking devices in them or something or were taught to not fight. Who knows...

I'd say its the whole 'conditioned' thing - there whole life involved subtle manipulation from a very very young age. running away probably never entered their minds!

[SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go Empty
PostSubject: Re: [SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go   [SPOILER ALERT] Never Let Me Go EmptySun Aug 23, 2009 4:50 pm

This was such an interesting and thought provoking book. Thanks Emily for the suggestion. It's actually been a few weeks since I read it and have had some time to process how I really feel about it.

One of the first issues it brought up for me was the obvious science and its advancement in our lives even today. My parents are very anti-socialization/progression and my views defer from theirs quite a bit. So, this hit home at least in the sense that I've had these discussions over and over with them. Whether something like this could, or is (to an extent) currently happening? It's an interesting thought, but I'd hope that there would be enough humanity out there that would see the devastating possibilities. I could go on and on. Let's just say that I certainly hope that if the situation arises that I would be in a position to argue against it for a number of reasons.

A second concern for me was one you all have already expressed, the characters and their manipulation of one another. Not to mention the way they were manipulated by the system that created them. The way Ruth treats nearly everyone she comes in contact with until the very end of her life and only with Kath. It's a way of life for them. From the first days of school to the last minutes of their lives, they are manipulated and used. My last hope was that Kath would run screaming from the whole "experiment", but in the end she didn't. It was so sad. Because in reality what did she have to live for? Everything she ever "had" wasn't really hers, down to the positions she acquired in school and back to her own life.

Overall, I really loved the writing and the steadiness of the book. I never felt like I was being fed too much, but just enough to keep it going. I was always curious about how it would end. And even the ending, as depressing as it is, was still exactly what it should have been. It also helped me to have a greater appreciation for the freedoms I do have and encouraged me to venture further into the unknown.

Thanks again Emily, it was great!
