The Long Road: the importance of Networking Empty
PostSubject: The Long Road: the importance of Networking   The Long Road: the importance of Networking EmptySun Feb 08, 2009 11:05 am

I LOVE to whine about the query process! It's so frustrating. I've been querying since July '07 for my novel and I've only had a few bites. The most frustrating part is the lack of feedback. "Thanks but no thanks" is not constructive. I realize that agents simply don't have the time for anything else but how can you improve if no one tells you what you're doing wrong? The best thing I've done for my writing so far is to network with other writers. Sites like www.rallystorm.com and www.authonomy.com are GREAT! I've made friends, networked with people that can relate to what I'm going through, and most importantly.... I've been critiqued! The critique groups tell you everything that a rejecting agent would. I shaved an amazing 23,000 words from my MS and it's so much better now! Get out there and meet other writers! It's the best thing I could have possibly done to improve my craft!

I signed up for authonomy to check it out but I haven't posted anything. I've heard really great things about it and awful things about it, so I'm still an observer right now. I was thinking about throwing up some of my older stuff that I don't intend to publish though, to see what people think of my writing in general. Could be fun! Thanks for the recommendations and good luck on your revisions!

There is a good site related to authors & agents (it's free) called querytracker that's pretty good as well. It's a good way to match up your work with agents that handle that type of work. It also 'splains which agents respond & which ones don't - which are most active etc.

Thanks for the networking sites abonilla, I'll have to check them out, though I have to admit, this is the first forum I've been brave enough to join. There's something nerve-wracking about putting myself 'out there'. I seem to have this fear of being targeted by a pointed (cyber) finger with echoing laughter reverberating around it...

"YOU! A WRITER!? HA-HA-HA " (HINEOUS MUSIC ATTACHED)

But then, I also feel desperate to talk to someone like myself. My husband is incredible and has always been there to support me, as my wonderful friends and family have been... the thing is... NONE of them enjoy reading (get off the floor, it's okay... everything is gonna be alright...), or writing. Though their words are always kind and (mildly) interested, I have nobody to share my work with.

Woe is me, eh!

So yes, I think networking must be important, and for me, would be therapy Smile

I'd like to hear where others find their support... is there anyone else out there who feels a little alone in their joy of writing?

JM

JM - It can be lonely but there are lots of sites & blogs where you can connect. This site is very good & so far, the folks are very nice. I've made some incredible friends through the process - but I've been cautious.

It depends on what stage you've reached with your writing, so that will have an impact on the sites that you get involved with. If you're just getting out of the gate - you might be intimidated by some. Trust me, there are lots of egomaniacs out there that think they know it all & seem to get some kind of sick satisfaction in being 'snarky' rather than helpful. Be selective with where you post samples for critiques & don't get too caught up with looking for validation (also keep in mind tastes vary). Work hard & be objective with your rewrites & editing efforts - & read everything aloud during the process. That will help you with your own critique of voice & flow & will help you find errors, stumbling points or clumsiness. It's a very cool thing - this writing stuff. Have fun with it.

Good luck - Dave

Of course there are no Egomaniacs here (please ignore my rank title Laughing )

But i agree with Dave, JM - i've been a member of about four or five of these type of boards across a number of fandoms and it is amazing the people you make friends with and actually keep over the space of two or three years! Also its excellent to network as a writer as well - think of all the potential readers your contacting.

For me, i have family at home who are readers and supporters but don't see it as a 'career' so i tend to keep my 'emily cross' persona underwraps. apart from my mother and brother no one else knows that i even contemplate being a writer, and like what you were saying in regards to:

Quote :
"YOU! A WRITER!? HA-HA-HA " (HINEOUS MUSIC ATTACHED)
sort of comments but i'm afraid of that occuring in real life, but on the internet i've found a lot of kindred spirits (not to sound cheeeeesy Smile )

The Long Road: the importance of Networking Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Long Road: the importance of Networking   The Long Road: the importance of Networking EmptyMon Mar 09, 2009 7:01 am

Good morning y'all - I have investigated several sites (have joined only a handful) & have connected with some seriously cerebral & talented writers. I do limit my involvement with bigger groups just because of time constraints - novel writing takes lots of time & is the priority. I visit writer blogs from some of the sites & save the better ones as favorites & try to keep up with them & comment when possible or when I have something to add or tease about. ReNu & Angela (as examples) do a very nice job offering suggestions. (Don't tell Angela or she'll wanna get paid - but I have referred to her Thesaurus.) My blog is not very "writerly" so no one will learn much on a regular basis there, but I have fun with it describing real life "stuff" in my own wacky beach world. Other groups that I like (promotion stuff) include AuthorsDen - Author & Book Event Center / Author 101- ReadKiddoRead & Shrinking Violets Promotions.

This site is nice because it's a very diverse group with lots of personality - it's only intimidating when Emily's banner is positioned over the reply box, staring at me as I type.
