| That's terrible, Emily! D: At least you backed everything up--I'd probably be freaking out for you if you didn't. Still, even though it's a major waste of time, I'm glad it wasn't worst as it was. ^^ | |

| Doubts. I think that's my big problem at the moment. I knew what was happening in the chapter I was trying to write, but it's just been sat there, languishing, for days. Today, I finally realised what the problem probably is. I'm afraid that it won't come out as good as it seems in my head. I'm afraid it won't be any good. I'm afraid it will be unnecessary to the plot.
I managed to convince myself that it doesn't matter yet, though. I have to remember that it's the first draft. Not only will it get changed a lot because of that, but it's also in the first three chapters. And they will get polished a heck of a lot more. I just have to get it written for now.
Does anyone else get this? Care to share your stories and how you remind yourself that you don't have to get it perfect first time?

| Yes Daeonica - your talking to the girl whose still nursing a prologue which may actually have to be cut completely in the second draft. I've realised that it is stiffling me and i need to let it go. I've come to the realisation that i have to 'allow' my writing to suck in the first draft. I get so panicky that its not perfect or won't live up to my ideas in my head that i get paralysed and end up writing nothing!! So i totally get what you mean. I guess we have to make ourselves keep typing and think - rewriting is where it all begins. It helps me to view my first draft as a blue print rather than "the novel", that way i won't get hung up on the writing but want to get the ideas down so i have a idea where i'm at (if that makes sense). Dermot Bolger is writing a two-part series about the process of writing fiction for the irish times: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2009/0820/1224252939791.html - Quote :
- THERE IS A popular notion of writers as omniscient masters of our invented universes, pulling the strings of puppets who dance only to our tune. Some writers do work in this way. I wish I did. If so I would probably still have hair, but my imaginative life would be less interesting. To put it simply, if I knew what was going to happen every time I sat down at my desk I would probably never bother sitting down.
This really stuck me! because i don't feel like an omniscient master although with all the advice on outlines etc. i feel i 'have to be' but thats not true!
