For Those who have inspired you to follow this path. . .

In the light of 1st daughters post on the 'let off steam' thread, i stared this thread.

when/if ever i do get published i always knew that in the 'acknowledgement' section i would thank my secondary school (highschool) english teacher for both believing that i had talent and for making me love english and poetry through her amazing teaching.

So i thought for those of us who haven't gotten the 'acknowledgement' section yet, this could be a thread for talking about those amazing people who have inspired you to become a writer.

For me, it wasn't anyone at school - since I didn't start writing fiction until my 40s! I had some wonderful teachers, who encouraged me in other directions, but I never even tried any creative writing so there was nothing for them to nurture!

For me, the main support and encouragement I had was from other novice writers on a fanfic site, where we all started out as beginners together, reading one another's work and offering support and ideas. A bit like the Writer's Chronicle forum, really!

I would probably thank my older brother for proofreading everything I write (even though he doesn't read. At all. Much less romantic-fantasy novels). He's definitely number one. I'd dedicate it to him.

Hmmm maybe I would thank my teacher Ms. Rizza who I've had for two years. She was not only my English (and soon to be Creative Writing) teacher, but also she is the Reflections (we make the literary magazine) advisor. I never really got so serious about writing until her class. Smile

PostSubject: Re: Our unsung heroes   Our unsung heroes EmptyFri Jun 19, 2009 1:55 pm

Thanks so much Em! What happened to me was a real eye opener. It's so important to thank and recognize those in our lives who direct and guide us; some without their knowledge. None of us do it on our own, even if it's a famous author who inspired us, we still wouldn't driven without their example.

As I mentioned in the 'Let Off Stem' thread my flute professor is someone who, over the last three years has played a very important part of my life. She helped me remember who I was after having my first child and know I wasn't just a mom I was more than that. She helped me to seek out new ways to define myself and by so doing I discovered a story teller I never knew existed. And on top of all that she helped me remember how much my music was important to me, having left it behind years before I met her. She has been a true inspiration to me and I pray that she continues to do better.

I'd also of course have to thank my parents and my husband. But also my children, because through the difficulty that was becoming a mother, I found who I really am. What a journey.

Well, I'm going to stop blathering, because I could go on for days and I want to hear about everyone else. Thanks for the post Em!

I would thank my high school Social Studies teacher {weird right?} because he read my whole novel and loved it, and helped inspire me with ideas for the other nine in the series!

I'd also shout out to this sight also, even though I've only been a member for a few days, it seems like this is a family so I'd gladly shout out to WC and hopefully i can fit into this family ^^

All my Global teacher did this year was stop in the middle of her sentences and complained that she had a headache and that she forgot what she was going to say. D8

Though my English teacher/Reflections (writing club) adviser read a few of my chapters. :3

I think I could write a whole chapter on thanking everyone. But I guess that's really what multiple published stories are for right? Smile

I'd definitely thank everyone here for being so supportive. I would add the high school I worked at for 2 years for the same. The people I worked with kept pushing me forward. Then there's my hubby and daughter and rest of the family. Also 3 teachers especially for what they taught me. 2 are English teachers and 1 is a photography teacher.

Then there's the musicians and authors who have given me inspiration through their words and music.

Is it better to have just a couple of dedication lines on a page, or a separate "Acknowledgements", like in a thesis? I'm all for the latter.

Dedications & Acknowledgments are different.
Dedications are the bit at the front where it says 'For X, with love' or something similar. "This book is for Y, so many thank yous" - stuff like that. The acknowledgments can be at either the start or end, and that's where you thank your agent, editor, parents & budgie.
