PostSubject: The Autumn Goals Challenge   Sat Aug 08, 2009 4:18 am

Right. It seems to me like the forum has had a bit of a lull recently. Which is understandable - it's summer, lots of people are on holiday, lots of people will be outside enjoying warm weather.

What I would like to do is, over the next couple of weeks, have everyone (or those that want to, anyone - obviously it's not compulsory) tell me a goal that they have for the coming months. It doesn't have to be big - you can update your goal(s) once you've met one, or if you have to change it.
Once you've set your goal, I want a weekly update of how far you've come towards meeting that goal. And don't worry - it's quite likely that I'll be having to say that I've not managed to do anything this week, or something like that.

What I'd like to achieve is somewhere where there's no huge pressure to have something to talk about - it's not an AA meeting. What I'm aiming for is somewhere where we can just talk about our goals. If you have to come each week and say how much progress you have, I think we'll have far more motivation to move forwards.

The goals don't have to be about 'actual' writing - they can be to get a query letter written, or make a plan, or even find a crit partner that you work well with.

I think the end of August would be a good time for everyone who wants to get involved to come up with a goal (or several) by.

So, to sum up:
People who are interested will post a goal here by the end of August.
It doesn't matter how big or small that goal is.
Every week, they will post about what progress they've made towards that goal, even if no progress has been made.
This is about motivation - please don't feel forced to do things - it really doesn't matter if some weeks you haven't found time to work on your goals.

My feeling is that this project will work better over a longer time period. I've called it the Autumn challenge for now, and I think we should run it until at least the end of October, but if it's working well then of course we can keep going. A lot of us here will probably be doing Nano in November, and I think this could run through there too. But please, I want your input here too, guys. Let me know what you think.

Very Happy

I have three major goals for this fall/winter. And they are:

* Finish Shattered Truth (The Adonian Chronicles, Book Two) by October 20.
* Finish edits on tSotD before the end of the year (goal is by the end of October, although I don't know if I can make it).
* Write the third book in The Adonian Chronicles for NaNoWriMo this year. Not really a fall goal, but whatever.

Awesome idea. Here are mine:

Write 10,000 words more for 1st MS before the year is out; complete research for 1st MS.

Write 10,000 words for second MS.

Get at least 5 bylines this year

Publish one article by me before the year is out.

Those are dreams, rather than goals. Of the lot, #3 looks likeliest - I already have 2 bylines this year, so 3 more will do the trick.
I have NIL ideas for articles, so #4 may not happen at all. #1 and #2 will need a lighter schedule. I suck.

Ok, here are mine for end of october (Halloween)

#1. Research complete for Sod, The Ratbox and The unEnding

#2 20,000 words for SoD

#3 20,000 words for the unending.

Unrealistic but i want to aim high!! Smile

I'm glad you all want to join in with this.
What do you think about moving the start date a bit closer? I wasn't sure how soon people were going to see the post, and today I was thinking about it, and the end of August seems a long way away...

I don't see why the start date can't be in a few days. >w< It gives us more time to complete our goals.

My goals to complete by Halloween:

1) 20K words for my WIP
2) Update outline (chapters I had written but not put in the outline) and outline all of Part I

Oh, and for the end of August: Get past major plot-hole in Chapter 7 @_@

That is all. Wish me luck. ^_^;

OK, shall we make this Friday our first report in date?
Even if it's just to say, "I'm here at the moment, and that's where I want to be". I don't know if anyone will have progress that soon, so it can just be an official start date. And of course, more people can join in after that if they want to.

(woo I'm back from summer insanity!)

My goal for the month right now is to sort through the three outlines I have that fit one story, PICK ONE, re-write said outline and start working on the story.

That's the best I can do for right now... I'm sort of in this Bermuda triangle of outlines... its disturbing. Haha. Wink

Welcome back, missjulie!

Hmm, here's mine, but I think I'll add a couple as we go:

Write 1000 words a day for the remaining days in August - I should have 22k by the end of the month
Pick a title for Martha's story
Outline more of Dangerous Dances, ready to come back to later
Write one short story a week
Send those short stories out to places

I'll see how that goes. One short a week might be a bit ambitious, but at the moment I have no job, so it's not like I'm short of time. And that way, I'll have something to send out, so I'll feel a bit more like a 'real' writer, even though there's a long way to go before any novels are at the send-away stage.

So, so far this is who's participating:

Me (daeonica)
Novel
Emily
ReNu
Moonlight Mania
missjulie
RosieT

I also think Friday is good. I'll be starting my vacation that day so I won't be able to check in but I'll be writing all weekend so I can check in the following week. (Next Monday perhaps)

What a great idea (though I hate to see a thread with the word 'autumn' in the title, when I'm pretending the summer won't be over for a long time yet....)

My targets are:
1) Finalise the text of the book I finished in May. This involves waiting for the edits and copy editing to come bak from the publisher and approving or tweaking, plus some final checking over. Also, find a title we all like and approve cover visuals and blurb.
2) Crack on with my WIP. I am at the 20,000 words stage now, but the plot keeps undergoing surgery, so there may need to be some reworking of this opening. This autumn I want to get the bit I have in shape and then write on - and I'd ideally like to reach 60,000 words (half way to the notional word target) by the end of 2009. Probably won't happen, though.

I shan't be around to report on weekly progress for a while - off on holiday for two weeks on Friday. But I'm taking my laptop with me...

Good luck, everyone, with meeting your targets!

Here's my Friday report:

OHMYGOD I already have completed my goal of five bylines for the YEAR! I got three bylines this week!

And as per publishing my own article, I've been put on a story assignment for next week, and have also been asked for further story ideas.

Drinks are on me...

The bad report: my MS lies neglected Sad

Yay ReNu, that's fantastic! cheers How did you get 3 in one week? Tell us more, we like to know these things Smile

OK, seeing as I remembered this yesterday morning, then forgot....

Welcome, everyone, to the start of the Autumn/Fall Goals Challenge. Every Friday (or thereabouts) we will now be reporting the progress on our goals.
You can consider this either the first reporting day, or the start day. Smile

The only goal I've been working on this week was 'write 1k a day', which worked for the first two days, then sort of got lost for the next two. I hoping today can be a fresh start for that.

So, what are we waiting for? Go go go!

Well, this is kind of a goal for next month, not really for August because we are in moving mode and trying to catch up on things we've procrastinated on and have to do before we move and packing and such.

So, my goal for September is:
1) Start writing again.

That is it. I have been on this writing hiatus for a few months now and all my characters are itching to talk again. Even my very first set of characters and the story I have to rewrite are telling me where to put things now in the outline so that things make more sense when I rewrite. It's really cool. So, that is all. I will begin my updates as soon as we have internet set up at my new home.

I think that's a good goal, Gobble. ^^ Sometimes it's really hard to get back into the pace of things.

Awesome job, ReNu! Very Happy *toast*

Although I haven't finished either of my goals, I'm actually changing them. Due to the fact I have decided to go NaNoWriMo this year, I will be outlining my NaNo novel from now until Halloween.

Goals (Reloaded 8D)
1. Outline NaNoWriMo - Halloween
2. Successfully write 50K words for NaNoWriMo this year -- December 1st
3. Character Maps for two MCs -- Wednesday (I'm almost done :3)

I feel like completing a novel, even one not as complex as my main one, will still boost my confidence and allow me to finish my current novel a bit easier, since I know I already can finish a novel. ^^

I hope so... my only goal was to finish an outline and start a new one... doesn't sound like a lot, but... it is.

Half of the problem is that I just don't want to sit down and stop moving! I'm so busy with other stuff :/

I'll try tonight... *hopes*

Right! Today is our first report back day, so come along and tell me how it's been.

I hope you've all had a better week than me - I've done absolutely rubbish so far for meeting my goals.

First it was write 1k words a day on my WIP - sooo haven't done that, I'm not even going to mention the total I did get written! It's aweful!

I haven't really written a short story this week, either.
What I did do, though, which sort of counts, is write a story for a contest. It had to be under 250 words, and inspired by the photo posted on the site. That was fun Smile

So how are you doing? After my not-very-inspiring start?
