PostSubject: Word Lover and YA Novelist Here   Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:48 am

Hello all, I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. I'm currently in the midst of writing a YA novel. I've been working on it a little over a year and I'm about halfway through the first draft. I'd love to be able to get through the second half at a faster rate, but we'll see how that goes. I've got a few distractions (which, incidentally is the topic of my latest blog post), such as a full-time job, three kids and a husband that tend to pull my attention away from my writing. All very worthwhile distractions, certainly, but I would love to be able to spend hours every day writing.

Oh, and as my user name testifies, I love, love, love words--the bigger and fancier the better. Unfortunately, I've had to learn to pull the reins in on this obsession somewhat. I've found it's not really a good idea to have your main character in a YA book using 10-dollar words when he's never read a book.

This looks like a great place to share ideas. I'm sure I'll be spending more time than I should here. Smile

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

I keep trying to pronounce your username properly without staring at it for ages - it's not working! Lovely name Smile

Please get stuck in to posting. If you want to join the 'share your work' forum, you can PM one of the moderators (*cough*likeme*cough*) - all you need is about 30 posts, so we know you're not going to come and steal all our work Wink

Thanks, Emily and daeonica!

I think I'm going to like it here.

Emily, my YA novel is about a 15/16 year old boy/young man growing up in medieval Scotland (maybe you can give me some pointers there, daeonica). It's actually the first book in a trilogy (I've got the other two loosely mapped out).

I'm not really sure how to pin down its genre, besides the YA part of it. It's not really an historical novel, though I am trying to make it historically accurate. It's not really a romance, though that is a strong theme. There's adventure and a few dirty little secrets that apparently everyone but the main character, Eòin, seem to know about (and many of these secrets concern him). And then he undergoes a very traumatic, life-altering experience and he has a really big secret of his own that he tries, unsuccessfully I might add, to hide from those around him. I'm tempted to call it a fantasy novel, but there's no magic or mythical creatures (though they are referenced as part of his cultural heritage). There is, however, a strong mystical component throughout the second half of the book. But there's not really a YA Mystical genre, is there?

The 'share your work' forum sounds intriguing. Tell me more.

Oh, and daeonica, Sesquipedalian is my all-time favorite word, which is saying a lot since I dearly love words (thus my reason for picking this word as my username and the title to my blog). Actually my blog is in part a means for me to indulge my sesquipedalian tendencies since I really have to keep a lid on them when writing YA in first person.

Hey and welcome! Your MS sounds awesome (I would totally read it). I look forward to seeing you around the boards.

I'm Novel, and I'm one of the mods around these parts. I'm usually in-and-out due to my rather insane schedule lately, but will respond to PMs as soon as I get them, so feel free to send me a message if you need anything!

It sounds like it could be Historical - fantasy Sesquipedalian, but thats just a quess. It sounds intriquing though!! Have you read 'the poisin throne' - its a trilogy by an irish writer with a sort of alternative europe (i haven't read it yet, its sitting on my book shelf) but definitely you should drop in and have a look at o'brien presses - they publish alot of kids and ya books which are based on irish mythology and past stories - which could be classified similar to your book.

heres the link: http://www.obrien.ie/

your book sounds really interesting though!!

SYW forum is a hidden forum we have here, where people can post their shorts or exerpts to get feedback from other members. We like to have people critique/comment before posting straight away but we're pretty easy, considering we've now made it private.
Basically you post 30 times (or make a decent number of good posts i.e. not spam) and you pm one of the mods like me or daeonica and we'll give you access.

heres the link for poison throne: http://www.obrien.ie/book843.cfm

and another book http://www.obrien.ie/book843.cfm

Thanks for the welcome, Novel!

Yeah, I was actually thinking Historical-Fantasy might be the way to go, Emily. I'll check out the Poison Throne trilogy--thanks for the suggestion!

I guess I'll just have to get to 30 posts quickly. Smile

Oh i saw on wendy's thread that you have completed a master thesis? i was wondering what in? Mine was part of MBS in human resources, but cause of my psychology undergrad degree, i decided to do it on special needs assistants and emotional labour and personality.

Currently trying to apply for phd, would love to know what area you studied in

Hi Emily! I actually started off in Engineering. I love math and science (my husband thinks that's the sign of a sick mind). 3 years into the program I ended up going on hiatus, did the marriage-two kids-divorce thing and didn't make it back to college for 6 years (where, incidentally, I met my amazing husband and later had another child). By then I just wasn't interested in Engineering anymore, though I still like math and science. I thought about being a teacher, but ended up getting my BS in Anthropology, with an emphasis in Archaeology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I went on to get my MS in Cultural Resource Management, working in GIS all the way through grad school. I found that it was a lot easier and generally better pay to get a job in GIS so I ended up in that field. I currently manage a GIS Department for a county government.

I really wanted to go on for a PhD, but I really don't see that happening any time soon.

So, if you go for your PhD, what area would be your emphasis? And where are you looking at going for the PhD program?

Well i've been offered one from my postgraduate university - which is great and am currently applying for internal funding (fingers crossed) - my area will be in women and leadership, still working on the specifics though Laughing

thats amazing that you did anthropolgy, in Ireland we've arts programs where you can pick three subjects in first year and then carry on with either two or one (for psychology you had to just do that subject after the first year). So i ended up going to a few anthropology classes, they were really interesting, but it clashed with Greek and Roman history (which is one of my favourite things) so i dropped it. It was amazing to listen to the lecturer though.

Hi MM! I found your blog after reading all your posts here on The Writer's Chronicle and am impressed with your academiadic ways. I'm not really a sesquipedalian, more of a maker-upper-of-words-as-I-see-fit. After reading your blog I feel like my SAT vocabulary score has shot a hundred points!

"Reticent is to loquacious as multifarious is to _______ a) nefarious, b) multifaceted, c) my brain is about to explode, or d) homogenous"

Have fun on the Chronicle and blogging!

Hi Diana! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm glad you liked it and I'll see what I can do about turning you into a Sesquipedalian, although I do confess a certain fondness for individuals of the maker-upper-of-words-as-I-see-fit ilk.

I took a gander at your blog this morning and I think I'm going to have fun there. I'll have to wander through it more later since I'm technically working right now. Smile

Emily, I really loved anthropology and ancient history. If I didn't have to work for a living (alas), I would be a perma-student and just take classes for fun forever.

Hi again... I can't believe you answered my trick question correctly! The answers were C AND D! And for those of you who tried it and whose heads exploded, send me the cleaning bill and accept my apologies.

Thanks MM, for stopping by my blog. I tend to write long blogs, or maybe it's the big font I use, but either way I appreciate a new visitor Smile

By the way, Diana, prior to entering grad school I took an evil multi-hour exam they casually term the Graduate Records Exam (or GRE). It had many, many questions formatted just like your question. Not that I'm implying you're evil or anything...

Oh, and I visited your blog and enjoyed it very much. However, it would not allow me to post a comment. I've had this happen on a couple of other blogs and I'm not sure what's up with that. I was able to post comments to a couple of blogs today, but not on a couple of others. I'm not sure what the difference is between the different blogs. Very perplexing...

Oh, thank you for joining my blog, Emily. I'm going to check yours out today. Smile

Hi again MM! Those questions ARE evil! A part of my brain hurt taking that section of the SATs, but that was the section where I scored highest so go figure.

I saw that your comments are working now. Thanks for checking out my blog Smile Here's my weird Blogger phenomenon: every time I add myself as a Follower to anyone's blog, it logs me out of the internet. All my open screens shut off by themselves!

Thanks, ReNu!

Sorry I've been MIA here for awhile. I got a little overwhelmed with trying to keep up with my blog (I only post about once per week, so I haven't been keeping up on that well) plus my lonely novel, a full-time job, a family, etc., etc. You know how it goes. I'm hoping to find the time to visit here a little more, though.
