PostSubject: Re: Characters: Names & Personality   Characters: Names & Personality EmptySun Feb 08, 2009 6:59 am

Well, the story that I'm working on at the moment, called The Enigma, has some VERY interesting characters, ranging from humans to ghosts to Death (uppercase 'D') and Lucifer himself.

I know, right? Crazy!

My MC is Kaylene Grey, sometimes called Kay, a sixteen-year-old girl who is trying and failing miserably to come to terms with the death of her older brother. She's very open-minded most of the time but isn't always that great about admitting that she's made a mistake. She's of average height and she's a little on the thin side. Her hair is brown and her eyes are blue.
Pic (this model's eyes are brown, so just pretend that they're blue): Kaylene

Lucas Grey, called Luke, is Kaylene's dead brother. He was very sarcastic and, at times, downright mean but loved his family and would defend them all to the death and beyond. He was also very goofy and dorky and LOVED playing pranks on Kaylene. He had brown hair and brown eyes. He was very tall.
Pic: Luke

Alas, I cannot find pictures of Lucifer or Death. It's sort of annoying, really...but perfectly understandable, seeing as how they're not exactly human.

I think I've fallen in love with one of my characters. His name is Damon (a last name hasn't come to me yet; any suggestions?) and he's beautiful. He has long hair and bright blue eyes, but at the moment he's 16. I guess that makes it illegal for me, but oh well.

Anyway, Damon is very straightforward and not shy about anything. He has this random databank in his head of useless information, like the properties of iron, and at any given moment he'll throw a fact at you. He seems like he could never do a mean thing in his life, but when it comes to protecting the people he cares about, that all changes.

Double post. Sorry.

I was writing tonight and I wanted to post a little section that clues you in a little to Damon's personality. In the scene, he first meet's Melanie, the MC and narrator. He walks up to find her staring at the gated entrance to their high school.

Quote :
“You seem to really like those gates. Did you know that iron was discovered by the Egyptians?”
“No, I didn’t know,” I said, because I really had no idea how to respond to that and wasn’t exactly sure why he told me in the first place.
“Well, it’s speculation, anyway. I haven’t seen you around before, though I’m not admitting to having seen everybody who goes to this school, because, well, that would be a ridiculous notion.”

Oh Damon, a 16 year old genius. This is the way he always talks.

PostSubject: Re: Characters: Names & Personality   Characters: Names & Personality EmptySun Mar 01, 2009 6:01 pm

I have a huge-normous cast for In Their Blood. I've been working on fleshing them all out this weekend, and I think I'm going to do a lot more of it over the next week.

Main characters:

Cathy Elaine Samson
Cathy is my main character. She's 22, with pale skin, blue eyes and long red hair. She's tall and she's not skinny, but she's not fat either. She's a very nice person to those who know her, but she has a hard time making friends because of her upbringing and can't keep a boyfriend because she has commitment issues.
Pictures:
One
Two
Three

Bernice Lee Oswalt
She's Cathy's aunt. Bernice is a lot like Cathy in the fact that she is very secretive and desperately wants to get out of "the family business." She comes off as mean and takes charge of everything. She's of average height and is thin. Her eyes are the same blue as Cathy's. She is 48.
Pictures:

Other characters:

William (The guy that Cathy falls for)
One

Lucie (William's sister)

Francesca/Frannie (Cathy's best friend and roommate)

Magnum (Cathy's cat, named after the gun)

Leo (a member of Lucie's coven)

The characters I always end up like the most are my twisted characters. While I do like my main characters, they just aren't as exciting as the twisted characters that I guess would be antagonists, but min my mind they aren't. They're just people with a lot of spunk!

There are antagonists in my books, but usually they aren't as predominant and for the most part turn out to be the main characters themselves going through one of those inner struggles most people go through when deciding what path they may take in life.

i agree Blue, The antagonists do make the best characters. I love getting inside their heads, and to me the most interesting of the antagonist, is the type which is the opposite of the 'anti-hero', like the 'anti-villian' - they believe they are doing the right thing for the right reason without the awareness that they are the 'bad guy'. I live for those complex characters who don't know their right from their left.

PostSubject: Re: Characters: Names & Personality   Characters: Names & Personality EmptyMon Mar 02, 2009 12:30 pm

Dang it, Cilla's kicking my brain telling me to introduce everyone. So here I go.

Tara - Our lovely protagonist. Short sandy hair, green eyes. Picture - see banner. Seemingly normal girl suddenly thrust into a world she had no idea existed, ghosts, spirits, angels and demons roam about freely, invisible to the average human's eye. But, as she soon learns, Tara is far from average. Her practical nature works against her for a while where she looks for explanations where there are none. Eventually she softens and opens up, but her stubborn nature never dissipates. She's of a strong build, average height, archeologist at age ~ 23.

Morgan! - Morgan is... ageless. Midnight hair and ice-blue eyes, he's not entirely human, but strikingly close. He and Tara share a connection neither are completely able to comprehend. His power runs deep and just as dark, despite his noble intentions. Very powerful, and very fluent in the Spirit World. Picture - see avatar. *Swoon*

Anna - Morgan's sister. Tiny, dancer-like, long blond hair and Morgan's ice-blue eyes. Seemingly all-knowing, or at least, more so than everyone else around her. She is neither of the darkness like Morgan, nor crafted from the Light like Tara. She stands in the middle, watching both sides with resigned neutrality. Channeler. The most human-like of them all, save Tara, and yet with an intuition far greater than any of the others, and the ability to communicate directly with the energy flowing through the fabrics of space.

Cilla - Ageless as well, close to a couple hundred years old. Long, flowing hair, black irises, pale skin. She is the feminine version of Morgan, and even dated him for a while. The match didn't work nearly as well as either hoped, but the broke it off amicably. She, too, is powerful and fluent in the Spirit World.

Okay, happy, guys?

Cilla: Yes!
Morgan: Uhg.
Cilla: Oh, shut it. Is it so bad for me to flaunt?
Morgan: Flaunt what, precisely?
Anna: Don't encourage her.
Cilla: Everything.
Morgan: Lord help us.
Tara: Rolling Eyes

PostSubject: Re: Characters: Names & Personality   Characters: Names & Personality EmptyWed Mar 04, 2009 5:25 pm

I started a post and then clicked on something that deleted. Gah. Not fun at all.

Well, I have many works in progress. So, many characters.

I'll just group them together so this post doesn't look so huge.

1. Flare of the Sun, Shadow of the Moon, and Dawn of the Fallen
Catherine: 18 year old human girl who is a descendant from a long line of witches. Brunette, blue eyes, dancer.
Catherine pic
Lisa: 18 year old human girl who fawns over cute boys, love vampire stuff, a dancer, fiery red hair and bright green eyes. Best friend of Catherine
Lisa pic
Carson: Vampire who is one of Cat's bodyguards. Cat's love interest.
Carson pic
Tobias: Another vampire who is also one of Cat's bodyguards. One Lisa falls for.
Tobias pic
Gerard: VILLAIN! A vampire who is pretty darn creepy and sly.
Gerard
Antonio: The first of the vampire bodyguards (Guardians). He was married to the first witch who used a spell on emeralds to let vampires go out into the sunlight.
Antonio pic

I have more for that story...but those are the mains for all three.

2. Lovely Dreams (a ghost/love story)
Emma: 18 year old, blonde, and helps her dad with ghost hunts since her mom died of a brain tumor. She can see ghosts and communicate with them, but only when she dreams at night.
Emma pic
Sam: Civil War Soldier ghost that Emma meets in her dreams. And yes, I know it is ironic that I have a character named Sam that looks like Sammy from Supernatural. Wink
Sam pic
Emily: 22 year old college student that helps out her great grandmother at the house that is haunted by Sam. And although I have a brunette as the picture...Emily is actually blonde.
Emily pic
Paul: Emma's dad who used to be a psychiatrist, but now is a parapsychologist since he is searching for something about the afterlife to know where his wife is.
Paul pic
Edith: Emily's great grandmother who owns the haunted house.
Edith pic
Jon: Farm boy that Emily introduces to Emma.
Jon pic

I'm heading to dinner--I'll put up my two other stories that have characters who I know what they look like later.

Thanks. Gerard is actually Gerard Butler...he told me he looks like him. And of course Carson is gorgeous! It's Josh Groban. And I love my Sammy.

There's two more stories that I am working on.

Extinction
Emi: A blonde 22/23 year old girl who lives on her own and has no family anymore. She has one person she calls a "friend" but really is just an annoyance most of the time. She has a distinctive birth mark on her neck and has a really crappy job, even though she looks like she should be a model.
Emi pic
Nathan: He's a vampire (very different kind from the other ones listed earlier).
Nathan pic
Ben: He's what's called an "agent" who goes after vampires to make them slaves. He's actually a double agent--plays Emi into thinking he's on the vampires side and not with the government while he is all along.
Ben pic

Now I suddenly can't remember my other characters from my other story called, Dark Ink. See, so many characters just jumbled together sometimes.

Fascinating to read about all your characters, everyone, and see the fantasy pics! Not sure I can play this game, as I never seem to imagine my characters physically. I only really care about their inner life, and usually by the end of a book I honestly can't tell you whether the main characters are tall or short, plump or slim, dark or fair. I always know their age, because that seems relevant to their life experiences - but I hardly ever find I get a picture of their external appearance, except in tiny snatches.

Oh what A good place to post new pics of my characters and tell you all about them! First Power Of Friendship!

Petal, 16, gypsy girl, smart when it comes to all things Strada (Strada being the other world in my book), and takes the discovery that she is a Saviour Girl in her stride. has power over the weather.

Martin, 16, the boy who The Saviour Girls have to protect. When it comes to Strada, he's cool and comfortable, but in our world he's like a little kid, wanting to know more and getting excited over little things.

Sammy, 16, town girl, loves American TV shows and R 'n' B music and would rather be anywhere but having to save the world as a Saviour Girl. has super speed.

Kate, 16. farm girl, loves Manga and Anime, is exctied about being a Saviour Girl as it means she'll be like Sailor Moon. always has some sort of witty remark on everything that happens. has super sight.

Johno, 17, Petal's older brother, can use the power of crystals. has a crush on Kate.

Sona, 16, Petal's cousin. can read tarrot cards and is a brilliant fighter. a bit sparky.

Rono, 17. Johno's twin brother. doesn't want to get involved with the whole thing and would rather be making money on his stall.

The rest of Power Of Frienship cast are on my blog, I can't be bothered to go through some of the bad guys now.

as some of you know i've been using the book 'from first draft to finished novel' as a reference (i haven't done much due to exams etc.) but there are these character worksheets you have to fill out.

Its great cause i typed it up and made one for each of my characters and came to a realisation that 'DUh Emily' i couldn't fill them out!

This book is sooooo right, i do need to do all this stuff before typing a word of my manu.

I have a very interesting character in tSotD who I sort of ignored in the first write. I mean, he wasn't completely ignored, but I didn't know much about him.
His name is Orion and he's finally decided to give me backstory. It's pretty interesting. Honestly, he's almost like a bad guy, but on the "good" side. He's actually sort of based off of my friend Josh in the fact that he notices a lot and it irritates him. He's also really violent (Josh isn't, so that's where the similarities end), and he hates the royal family more than a lot of others in the story -- which is really saying something.

I dunno. I'm just having a lot of fun with this character.

I didn't want to create a whole new topic on this one little thing, so I thought I would post it here.

A lot (pretty much all) of my characters talk in the same way. Except for small dialects and the like, how do you differentiate your characters in that sense? Sure, I have characters that have a dirty mouth or call everyone "dear" and things like that, but it seems too similar...>_<; How do you guys differentiate your characters in speech?

Usually I try to stay away from the "usual" speech like you were mentioning when your characters would say, "dear" and the lot.

One thing you can do is to take a break--learn about your characters. Watch shows they may watch. Also just sit and type a dialogue piece between two of your mains. After just a dialogue--you may notice some little quirks that make your characters a bit different.

Also--you may notice some kind of catch phrase they do. For example: Stephenie Meyer has it with Jacob Black--always saying, "Sure Sure" because his dad does it but you only see it from Billy a couple times when Jacob ALWAYS says it.

I hope that helped a bit.

PostSubject: Re: Characters: Names & Personality   Characters: Names & Personality EmptySun Apr 19, 2009 1:57 pm

Catch phrases are good -- another thing is how they talk to different groups of people. For example, my speech is crazy informal when I'm talking to my friends and most of my family, but when I'm around my great-grandma, I do that whole don't-speak-unless-spoken-too thing and when I do speak, it's always formal and polite. No slang.

Another thing is slang. People raised in, say, the eighties, have different slang than my generation does. Also, regional slang -- in the South we say "fixing to" a lot, meaning "getting ready to," as in "I'm fixin' to go to the store."

Not to say that slang is necessary, but it helps, if used correctly.

Another thing to pay attention to is how the words sound -- a temperamental or touchy character will use a lot of harsh words. I don't mean like "mean" words like stupid or anything, but words that sound harsh. Quick words, made up of few syllables with lots of short vowel sounds and consanants. A more mellow character might use longer (not longer as in complex meanings, just longer) words with more syllables with a lot of long vowel sounds. This is why saying the dialogue out loud helps a lot.

Hope that helped. Smile

Foresight has lots of characters, but my favorite is Eros (Cupid). I actually baesd him on my friend Patrick who is a 6 foot 4 black man with washboard abs and a bald head. He is SUPER HOTT! I think he makes a great Eros because, while he isn't what people imagine Cupid to look like, he's every bit the sensual, lusty God. he is the one character guarenteed to make my readers (ladies at least) drool.
