| I totally think double posting is allowed on the vent thread. And boy, do I need to vent.
Warning: Trivial Rant Ahead
Okay, so I like sports. Don't get me wrong - I was an athlete in high school, varsity tennis and stuff, so I get how sports are important and how they should be nurtured at all levels of school. Good fitness, all that stuff.
They shut down. The entire University for a basketball game. It might have been the rival school showdown thingy, but seriously. I needed to get on campus for an academic event. All of the parking garages were full, and the $10 parking lots were full (I was annoyed I'd have to pay $10 for otherwise free parking) and the parking lots that had spaces were for basketball permits only! I literally had no place to park. Finally found a meter (that had shut off an hour earlier, so at least it was free.) like eight blocks from where I want to go. I'd like to think campus is pretty safe, so the chances of anything happening were slim, but I'm still really skittish about hiking around... anywhere, really, alone after dark. So I was clutching my little mace thingy with my Twilight Cullen Crest dangling from it, thinking if the mace didn't work I could probably slug someone pretty nicely with the heavy charm... All was well but I'm still irritated that EVERYTHING turned into a moneymaker for the sports team.
Arizona is in a financial deficit right now. The State congress just signed a bill with like a 40% budget cut for the state-funded universities. Departments are being cut and merged, about a quarter of the campus is in danger of being shut down... and no one does anything with the sports teams. True, they make money for the school, but that money doesn't leave the athletic department. I'm all for sports scholarships - but really, should coaches make more than professors? Professors don't make much money from the school. Those that have books published for the Literary majors and those that do research for the sciencey majors get external revenue from that. Why can't coaches get sponsors to pick up the tab, and have the university only pay what the professors get paid instead of shelling out six figures to them?
I just think our athletic department is a huge black hole in the financial bin for our school. It sucks in a huge amount of money from the school, and it does make a lot of money back, but it never leaves the athletic department.
I'm all for sports, I really am. I think we are grotesquely overspending here, though.
I realize no one else is from Arizona, so no one really cares, but the parking situation tonight just set me off and I had to vent, so thank you Emily for making this thread when you did.
And if you read this far, wow. Poor, tortured soul. My apologies. .....I feel so much better now. Sigh.

| ^ Hey! I'm not from Arizona, but that doesn't mean I don't care. That actually really pisses me off. It's messed up. Sports get way too much emphasis all over the place -- like at my school. The band kids played in the inagural parade and they win all sorts of competitions and do really really well (half the people that go to football games only go to hear the band play). And yet they get virtually ignored by the principal unless they bug him about it. See, we had these days during football season where the clubs were supposedly allowed to wear their club shirts. The band had to start a petition to get Simmons (the principal) to let them wear their shirts. It was disturbingly messed up. I'm not in the band, but still. It's a prime example of how sports are taking over and everything else is ignored.
Although, I must admit, the academics aren't really getting ripped off at my school. Yet, anyway. We get all this state funding because we're the top school district in the state of Mississippi.
Anyway...that really stinkgs, Ren. Just letting you know that I feel you and I totally agree with you.

| Ren that is insane!! there is a sport culture here but not really in the university and definitly not professional. our national sports are all amateur so no one gets paid - its all voluntary (for the love of the game) - i'm talking about hurling and gaelic football. Soccar here is only big on the international (ireland vs. whoever) sort of level. That being said in some of my family - the fact that my cousin won the under 16 all ireland final is a bigger deal than my brother getting his PhD!!! Vent: i've soooo much work to do with my course, its scary and my exam results are out next week and i know i failed at least one *sigh* anyhoo, i must make myself do some non academic writing this weekend and also stalk some more writing blogs and make them join up here lol Internet is kinda on and off at the moment. Ugh and these issues with the profiles is annoying me!! | |

| Right, I need to let off steam. Since I know my husband leaves Tuesday for boot camp and I won't see him for a long time, everything is ticking me off. I have incredibly short patience and am prone to tearing up at the most mundane moments. It's so hard. Hopefully it gets easier in time. Luckily I have family near. | |

| Aw Blue *sends virtual hug* i'm sorry! I wish there was something i could do, but its good that there is at least family near by. Remember you have every right to feel impatient and emotional (apart from pregnancy) - its a hard and emotional thing your going through for someone you love! You are such a good person! | Right, it's been awhile. Ren, I read your post and that sucks. Everything is screwing up right now, especially school related.
My vent is school loans. My husband is in the process of consolidating his loans and one of the lenders won't stop harassing us to pay. Apparently he forgot to put them in forbearance before he left and I can't do anything, So, since he's a boot camp, I'm going to have my brother call and say it's him with all the identifying info. Hopefully they don't figure it out, but they won't let me, his wife, do anything about it. So I'm left with this option since my hubby won't be able to call and it can take up to 45 days for loans to get consolidated. It's sooo annoying.
Then to top it off I feel like I'm handling his leaving too well. I keep feeling bad that I'm not having a really hard time with this, but I truly think I dealt with half of it before he left. I still don't like to be alone during the day, but that's when I go to my parents. But since he worked nights I don't really miss him at nights. Not until 10:00 though, that was when he came home for his dinner break for 30 minutes. But I really wonder what will happen this weekend. Maybe some of it hasn't set in yet.

| Go for it, Novel! I think you can do it. It sounds cheesey, but as someone who's messed up loads of times during performances, you just keep going and even laugh at yourself when its over. Then run and hide if you have to, but don't let the people watching you see you blush.
Hang in there!!

| Well, I do get stage fright pretty easilly. In Intro to Theatre last year I had a panic attack on-stage. But this time I'm pretty sure that it was just because I wasn't prepared. Last recital I was perfectly fine.
Anyway, moving on. My new vent is that we're almost out of Girl Scout cookies. I love Tagalongs...but we're down to three and my mom has dibs on them. Still, one of my friends is a Girl Scout and she's taking extra orders through Tuesday...
I know it's a silly vent, but in my family, Girl Scout cookies are coveted goods.

| I. Am. NEVER. Having. Kids.
Somebody please remind me that murder is illegal and that if I kill my brothers I'll go to jail. Please. Thank you.
Ugh. I'm just so sick of them. And I know they're toddlers, but why do they have to be so intent on destroying both my belongings and my fragile mind? Why? Anybody know?
I had to fish my things out of the fishtank (comment on the pun and face my wrath. I'm not in the mood) last night. My littlest brother decided it would be fun to throw several CDs, a candle, my mythology figurine set, my stereo remote, the canister of fish food and a whole lot of other crap into the tank. I haven't been having a great week anyway (and it's only Wednesday. Joy of freaking joys) and this crap is just making it worse.
Now I'm stuck home with both of my brothers and they're trying to kill each other and destroy the house.
I repeat, I'm never having kids. Ever.

| Ah Novel. I'm sorry about how your brothers are acting. Probably some excess energy wanting to exert itself somehow. Plus, toddlers are still very curious little creatures. You never know what the day will bring you--joy, sadness, laugther, annoyance, etc.
I had a horrible couple a days with my toddler, so I know how you feel. Except our problem was that she wouldn't listen.

*Five minutes later* When will that boy realize that jumping off of things gets you injured??? I just pulled him off the porch and now he's heading right back...*sigh*

If you were wondering what happened to me, I was doing AP History and Chemistry and Algebra 2 homework! Who gives homework during TAKS? Ugh! Not to mention I was the last person to finish my test and everyone was staring at me, waiting for me to finish. Thank goodness I had a break tonight! I could finally get on here and do something other than homework!

I'm sorry about that Blue. Just don't overexert yourself. I've kind of started to do some packing at home so that the moving company won't have to do much when they get there. But we have to have a house first to move.
