I'm still at Uni, trying to finish up studying Physics and Astronomy. I have little exams, nothing crazy like that, but I AM perpetually busy. Oi.

What's everyone else studying/doing?

I'm about a year and a half into my PhD program, Public Administration-with an emphasis in Public Policy, but took this quarter off to care for my new born. I'm *supposed* to resume at the beginning of March. *grumble* I might not.

iHeart, I could never do a PhD. I went straight from college to grad school to get my Masters and just couldn't go back. I am so sick of school. At least you get time off until March to care for your baby, that's about 12 or more weeks. I'm taking 12 weeks off to care for my baby once it's born and am very thankful that the job isn't quite full time.

Oh Iheart - a Phd Wow!! well done, but i can see what you mean, my brother did his phd and found it terribly hard and he was a single male with no responsibilities!

Can i ask what is the maternity leave is like in US? cause in ireland you're given 26 weeks maternity leave (with min of two weeks before birth to be take for health and safety) and you can take option of 16 weeks on top of that unpaid.

Its funny that you would ask that. My capstone project as an undergraduate (BA Political Science) was comparing the US to 15 other countries regarding maternity leave policies. (shamefully, Ireland was not included).

The US has no laws regarding maternity leave. It is strictly up to the employer or institution to determine what they offer, if they offer it at all. Many employers don't. (Speaking of shameful...)

wow. I knew that it was different but i didn't realise it was that much. Maternity PAY is left up to the employer (but you find the all pay it - name and shame etc.) but if they don't the 26 weeks is paid by government.

I think its cause our constitution is so family orientated. Mind if i ask what countries and how they compared?

you did your BA in political science, i was thinking of doing that myself, how did you find it?

I'm certainly interested in this, too. Good questions, Emily! I just wouldn't know what to ask, so I'm just going to sit back and learn from you. My own country scares me, sometimes, iHeart. I mean, I work in the US (and live and breathe too of course) but as I'm 21 and not a mother, nor a want to be mother, maternity leave was something I'd never considered before.

Our lack of setup seems a little scary...

This probably sounds stupid - our own health system sucks here but i remember watching er (george clooney era) with my mum and not being able to understand the whole 'no insurance' thing.

Not that i can talk - we have public healthcare system which is really i think the worse in europe. France/denmark just blows us all away with their systems and just can;t understand why my own country can't bring a system like that in!

We have - I have, I guess I can only speak for myself - my fingers crossed that the healthcare system will be fixed. That's the one thing that's ridiculous and it was one of the driving factors in voting in the elections. No one should be without insurance. Ever. I spent a summer in France and had a "holycrap the ideal IS possible?!" and since then I've been like "C'moooon 'States! Get on the stick!" No one should choose to stay home and not see a doctor when they're dying because they don't want to saddle their family with a bill they can't afford. It's... heartbreaking.

I haven't really had much experience of our system so far, but from what I know about it, that you kind of absorb growing up in a country, I really like it. (I live in Britain, for those who don't know).
I'm sorry, but I just don't like this idea of, not being able to get medical attention because it's expensive. You should never have to cut back on that to save money, IMHO.

PostSubject: Re: Whoozits what? [General Discussion]   Fri Feb 20, 2009 12:02 pm

Okay, I replied to this awhile ago and it did not post. *grumble* Tying it out again...

The US is NOT a family friendly government. They say that they are, but no laws or anything support it. We do have the Family Medical Leave Act, which provides six weeks of UNPAID (the gov't never pays) leave for a variety of reasons. It can be that your grandma is sick and so you take time off to care for her, you child gets in an accident so you are in the hospital with them for a week, or you have a baby and take time off for that. Of course, if all of this happens in the same year, you've got to divide the six weeks up between them. Again, employers can pay if they want, but most don't.

The tirade I want to go on about our health care system is not something I have the time for right now. Suffice to say, we've seriously considered moving to Canada. Or France. We're hoping change really is coming in the future. Its ridiculous that there are some people you never get broken bones set because they can't afford it. Its ridiculous that people die of cancer that could have been managed for years and years. Its ridiculous that our infant mortality rate is higher than several developing countries. Okay, I'm gonna stop here. Like I said, I don't have time.

emilycross - Getting a BA in political science was awesome. Its a broad field (international relations, comparative policitics, economics, public policy, political history, etc.) so there is a lot that holds interest for many people. I had a lot of fun studying as an undergrad.

Doesn't canada have one of the highest quality of life ratings in the world?

iheart thought you might be interested in this link: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/leave-and-holidays

We give out a lot about our country especially now with the banks and corruption- but things like 'adoptive leave' and free third level education (which they are trying to take from us) make it bareable Laughing

and its all due to EU - we would still be in horse and cart era with out them and their equal right legislation

PostSubject: Re: Whoozits what? [General Discussion]   Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:40 pm

The Maternity leave hear sucks in a way. I talked with my site and the Human Resource rep. said I could take 12 weeks, and that I have an opotional 4 months after that for baby bonding, but that my pay would be through disability. BUT remember I'm a therapist and am paid per diam (as in if the client shows). I'm leaving starting the 1st of July, the baby is due around the 17th, but my family has fast and early births. The shortest a work site can allow out here is 2 weeks, most is 6 weeks though. I'm lucky that I'm at a family friendly site with a majority of women and that I'm a therapist paid per diam in some ways...not too sure about that. By law, a job site is supposed to hold a new mothers job up to a year, but if the woman decides to take off the whole year she may not get paid after the first 6 weeks. However, some sites don't hold the job.

I got lucky with health care since my hubby is in the army. I will get excellent (so happy) coverage with no bills after or very very light bills, but most have no bills. My current insurance would require me to pay 500 for three days and I pay 40 dollars for a specialist visit (ie, perinatologist since I have hypothyroid they sent me there, and the OB). Once my hubby's insurance kicks in though I'll switch to Tri-Care premium and it's all free (I'm so excited).

My husband on the other hand only gets 2 weeks off and I can't say how much that sucks. I don't know when I'll be able to join him on base, especially since he finishes boot camp around the end of June when I'll be too far along to travel. And, if he's at a location I have to fly I won't be able to fly until the baby is 2 months. Although if it's driving, I might have my parents drive me out.
OH and what sucks even more is that when I go into labor and have arrived at the hospital I'll have to call Red Cross, Red Cross then lets his leader know who will send him out within 24 hours of the call. So I may have given birth already and he would have missed it. I can't say how much that sucks.

Luckily I'll be living with my parents and so I won't be alone when I go into labor (moving in with them April 1!). Maybe he'll even finish boot camp mid June so I may still be able to have someone drive me out (I refuse to take a road trip alone when I'm that far along, I'll be 8, almost 9 months then).

Well, you wanna hear something crazy? My nana and grampie were in Germany when my uncle Jeff was born (on an army base). My grampie got a week of leave right around my nana's due date...but my uncle was late. So the next week, when he was actually born, my grampie wasn't allowed to go be with my nana.

I hope everything goes well for you, Blue. Hope it all works out.

Okay, just because I've been itching to bust out with this...

IT'S ALMOST MARDI GRAS!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Mardi Gras is HUGE right around here (Southern Mississippi) and we're having a HUGE party in my French class. And everybody at school is going to pass out beads and I heard a rumor that the administration is going to relax dress code so that we can all wear our masks. I can't wait!!

My mom's taking me to Mardi Gras New Orleans as soon as I turn 21. I have no say in the matter. She says that we're both going to get completely and utterly drunk and crash in a hotel somewhere.
...
That's good parenting, huh?

I'm going to buy new shoes tomorrow. My feet grew and now my normal shoes no longer fit. Maybe they'll go back to their normal size after pregnancy. I hear that sometimes happens. I don't want to think about having to buy more shoes after pregnancy is done when I want my heals again or more serious tennis shoes that aren't just simple canvas ones.
