| I am I_am_Tulsa! I'm really happy to be here. Thank you for the invite! My interests include...bios, business, current events, novels, fantasy, sci-fi and science. I normally keep a book journal (not online) and hope to write my own book(s) one of these days! I have just started a blog at http://theartoflivinginjapan.blogspot.comPlease feel free to pop in and leave a comment! I am looking forward to exchanging ideas and thoughts! Oh, and I'm not very computer literate... Hopefully, I'll get used to all the online etiquette etc... but don't hesitate to let me know when I've done something silly! | |

| Wow! Thank you everyone for the welcoming! I live in Japan, am originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma thus the name...but spent most of my growing up years in California! I started the blog so that I could easily update my friends and family on my life in Japan, and of course it is also for anybody who is interested in Japan or Asia. feel free to ask questions! I am currently trying...to....write... a fantasy story with a mix of Asian and Celtic mythology. Just like any other traveller I will probably want to write a memoir sooner or later too. I wish I could answer what my favorite genre to read is, but it changes. I try to go back and forth between different types of stuff so that I don't get stuck in my own little fantasy world. BUT, I think a big anchor for me would be biographies, especially about journalists/writers. It's 'neat' to read about how people get started in their careers and some of the things that they had to go through, good and bad. I read at least two books a week. I'm not a fast reader, and I have a book I'm reading in every room and on every chair, so that doesn't help my pace either... So, here I am...how Emily found me is waaaaay beyond me, but I'm enjoying the opportunity to say what's on my mind to other book enthusiasts! | |

| Wow, that's an awesome background. And your bookshelf is amazing. Seriously, over 700 books! And yes, so many varied genres (some overlapping tastes which means my reading is not as pathetic as I thought it was). | |

| Ooohi love that your drawing on asian and celtic cultures Tulsa, if you ever need any information or a specific book - give me a shout (about celtic mythology) - Do you findit hard to get 'english language' books over in Japan, or is it all manga and Kanji? (sorry if that question was very sterotypical or offensive ) | |

| Thank you for the offer Emily! I will probably ask for your recommendations in the next few weeks! LOL As for finding English books, it is not as hard as it used to be. There is a growing number of Japanese people who read in English, and there are LARGE numbers of "foreigners" living in Japan - so bookstores tend to have an English section. However, lots of books written by foreign authors, (English, French and German authors are pretty popular here) are translated into Japanese for the majority of people who only read in Japanese. There are not very many stores that specialize in only English books, but I have been lucky with that! I used to work at one! Now I only help out from time to time, but I can order just about any book I want if it is not in stock. go to the link below in my blog and you will see a picture of the tiny store!ge Besides that everything is in Kanji . There are English translations of manga, as I'm sure you've seen before, that are imported from the U.S! Don't worry about "stereotypical questions"...that's what forums and blogs are for! We get to learn about culture and stuff we would otherwise have a hard time finding out about! http://theartoflivinginjapan.blogspot.com/2009/02/random-walk-books-english-book-store.html | |

| Wow! How exciting! I love Japan, but I'm one of those manga nerds. I'll have you know I was into Japanese culture and all that stuff BEFORE it became mainstream. I was just fascinated with the culture, and manga was my way into it. Anyway, I'm Ren, a moderator around here. Feel free to send me a PM with any questions or even if you just want to chat. I'm friendly!
See you around~

| OMG, I didn't notice all of these birthday messages! Thank you everyone! I had a terrible fever a couple days before my birthday and was recuperating...BUT thanks to the fever?! I had a wild "dream" that FINALLY meshed all of the topics I was trying to write about. My story is actually coming along very well right now...I'm not worrying about editing etc... Right now I am focusing on getting it all on paper. I haven't been checking the threads these days as much as Id like to but it means I am busy with my writing! Yeah! | |
