My stint with magazine journalism Empty
PostSubject: My stint with magazine journalism   My stint with magazine journalism EmptyThu Jun 25, 2009 12:59 am

I'm interning with a magazine at present. I love every second of it, although it means my other writing doesn't get much attention.

I *think* I'm learning a lot from it and especially like coming up with new intros and headlines. I haven't done any of my own stories of course - it's all editing and rewriting at the moment, and a bit of page layout. I love magazine journalism. It's not just reporting news but also explaining and analysing it. Also, unlike newspapers, most people don't throw away magazines immediately.

What I hope to do in the long run is become a specialist who analysis International Affairs in a regular column. Ah well, I suppose there are a few billion years left before that happens.

Journalism is a hard job at times, congrats on your dream! I'm sure it wont be a billion years....maybe a thousand ^^

Of course i'm joking. If you have a dream, then you'll be able to get it done i'm sure. that's what dreams are for right? to push you though your hardest and longest times in life.

Congrats ReNu! I love the idea of this, it just seems like it would be so much fun and a great learning experience. Even if all you're doing is editing that can be invaluable. I'm sure it will help your own writing just by having the opportunity to see how others do it.

Same question as Emily though...what type of magazine is it? I'm sure the vast majoirty are run in basically the same manner, but the topic would probably make it more or less interesting.

It's a weekly - covers politics, bit of lifestyle, books and sport. There's a supplement on health or finance every other week.

Emily, I had NO idea there were so many different kinds of journalism either, even after completing my course - magazine, newspaper, television, radio and internet were the only ones I thought existed. There's Agency journalism, Gonzo, Convergence and others I haven't even heard of.

It's just an internship! Although I have my fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes, and tongue crossed for getting a permanent job. As long as the people in my office don't think I'm a freak... Embarassed
