| I was in Barnes & Nobles on Monday and saw THE HOLLOW, which I recognized because it's by Jessica Verday, the very first "success story" over at Querytracker. What a gorgeous cover! Anyway, it was the only copy they had in stock (apparently it's common for newer authors to have hardly any shelf space). I bought it and told them they ought to order a case So far it's a great, atmospheric read and I'm happy to be "supporting" a new author. Has anyone else picked up any debut novels? | What a great thread idea! Well i'll be honest many of the debut authors i've read are on recommendation (and are usually well known by the time i pick them up) but i think you could start a trend Diana of a 'debut author support book club' or something I may check out the HOLLOW! its great to hear about others successes | |

| I don't know, or think about, whether a book is by a debut author when I pick it up. Yes, though, I am happy to read new authors. I don't see any reason not to. Like Emily, though, I often buy based on recommendations, especially at the moment when I don't really have much spare money for books. I'm less willing to take a chance on something I'm unsure about - instead I'll go for something recommended by someone who's choices I usually agree with - and if that's a debut author, then there's no problem with that. | |

| True, it's hard when money's tight... maybe if we had a post with debut authors' release dates we could at least seek them out in the bookstore for a PEEK and see if we'd want to buy. That's kinda what I did with The Hollow and it paid off! I liked the first few pages and now I'm loving the book | |

| I know she's technically not a debut author anymore, but perhaps if you are interested in supporting new authors you could check out 'Nightwalker' by Jocelynn Drake. We've got an interview with her coming up on the Book Bundle, as the next book in the series comes out at the end of the month. | |

| Excellent idea Diana! I'm surprised there isn't a 'debutauthors' website or something - like 'goodreads' or something which is about debut book releases??
I feel a light bulb going off in my head.
We should totally make a list - i know "dark Divine" by Bree Despain, is coming out around Decemember. It looks excellent! | |

| I haven't read a vampire book in a while, and 'Nightwalker' sounds great! Thanks for the tip Daeonica. Dark Divine looks so good! I went over to 'goodreads' and they have a list by another site called A Book Odyssey of 35 debut YA books for 2010: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1906.Debut_novels_of_2010_A_Book_Odyssey_Maybe someday we'll be on someone's debut list, and so it got me checking out the stories and a lot of these look fantastic! There's bound to be other genres with debut lists too, but it's worth a look if you like YA | |

| wow some of those books look excellent!! I may get into goodreads - i signed up ages ago but never got hooked they way i should of! Some of those books like witches alphabet look really really good!! I think the next YA trend after vamps and wolvies will (or should) be witches (and i'm not talking wizards ) | |

| I find a debut book is often a writer's best, because that's the book that finally cut through the slush to get agents' and editors' attention. Also, the author had years to polish it. But after signing, there's pressure to churn out "product". Yes, we do get better as we become professionals, but that first labor of love is often the one with the most passion. So I tend to seek out "first novels" when I read reviews and browse bookstores. | |
